Airport Transfers from Florence and Pisa: All Options Compared
When arriving in Tuscany, the first real impact of the trip is not the city, but the exit from the airport. That’s where you realize if everything is going smoothly or if, instead, you have to start improvising with tickets, queues, and negotiations.
Florence and Pisa are two very different airports, but they have one thing in common: choosing the right transfer makes a huge difference, especially after a flight of several hours.
Florence Airport
Florence airport is small and very close to the city center. This is a great advantage, but it also means that transport options are few and must be chosen with a minimum of attention.
Tramway
The tramway connects the airport directly to the center. It is the most economical solution by far: you arrive in the city for just a few euros.
That said, it remains public transport. It is often crowded, especially during peak hours, and work is still ongoing in 2025. In recent years, there have been episodes of pickpocketing and attempted scams, such as the sale of fake tickets. It works if you travel light, with little luggage, and no particular need for comfort.
Local Taxis
Taxis are right outside the airport, and on paper, the price should be around 35–40 euros for the center.
In practice, however, the cost can vary considerably. It is not uncommon for surcharges to be applied, and the total rises well over 60 euros. The quality of the service greatly depends on the individual taxi driver: it can go well, or it can not go well at all.
It is a fast solution, but unpredictable.
Private Transfer with Local Partner
The private transfer is the most straightforward option. The driver waits for you directly at the airport exit with a personalized sign, you know in advance who will pick you up and what type of vehicle you will use.
The price is agreed upon beforehand, around 50 euros, and in some cases, it may even be lower. There are no waits, no negotiations, no surprises. It is a discreet, private service designed to start your vacation without stress.
Pisa Airport
Pisa airport is a large international hub. It is much more sprawling than Florence and is often chosen by those who then need to reach Florence or other areas of Tuscany.
Precisely for this reason, choosing the transfer is even more important.
Public Transport
To leave the airport, you need to take a bus. Here, too, we are talking about public transport, often crowded and impractical if you are traveling with luggage.
The problems are similar to those in Florence: little comfort, no personalization, and you need to remain vigilant. It is an economical solution, but not ideal after a flight, especially if you then have to continue to another city.
Local Taxis
Pisa taxis mainly work on urban routes. Within the city, prices are generally acceptable.
However, when it comes to leaving the area, for example, to reach Florence or the Tuscan countryside, the costs can become very high. Fares are not always clear, and the feeling of a lack of transparency is quite common.
Private Transfer
For medium-to-long transfers, the private transfer is undoubtedly the most efficient solution. The price is defined before departure, there are no sudden surcharges, and the service is designed for those arriving from an international flight who want to optimize their time.
Comfort, punctuality, and clarity make the difference, especially when Pisa is just the point of arrival and not the final destination.
Various options exist in Florence and Pisa, but not all are suitable for every type of traveler. Public transport works if you have time and a spirit of adaptation. Taxis and occasional services can be fine, but they remain unpredictable.
